Cranial surgery covers both emergencies and planned procedures: intracranial hemorrhage, head trauma, hydrocephalus, skull base pathology and vascular disorders. Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın operates across open craniotomy, endoscopic neurosurgery and stereotactic techniques. His research training at the University of Florida under Prof. Albert L. Rhoton Jr. was concentrated on microsurgical neuroanatomy and fiber dissection, and this underpins his work in endoscopic endonasal approaches to the skull base, where the corridor to the lesion runs through the nose and no external incision is required. In intracranial hemorrhage, speed of intervention determines outcome. In hydrocephalus, a shunt diverts excess cerebrospinal fluid and relieves pressure. In pituitary tumors, the endoscopic endonasal route avoids opening the skull altogether. Intraoperative neuromonitoring is used throughout, because preserving neurological function is the constraint every other decision works around.
